During the elaboration of this scientific article I have been able to see how to carry out each one of the steps to do qualitative research (bibliographic review, explanation of the methodology, analysis of data, result explanation, comparison of the results obtained with the available literature, etc.). This is also my first experience conducting a qualitative data collection and analysis process, which has presented both methodological and interpretative challenges. The mixed-method study combines the integration of qualitative and quantitative data, providing a new approach to data interpretation. Understanding the perceptions of young people about the factors that motivate the consumption of alcohol has allowed me to deepen the theme of my doctoral thesis, and to understand from the qualitative side the data that I have been collecting at the quantitative level in the other proposed research. On the other hand, it has also allowed me to understand the process of publication (peer review) and how to approach the editors and reviewers of scientific journals. It has also allowed me to establish criteria for choosing scientific journals to publish in.

Reflections from the Organizing Committee

Date: 19 February 2025

Location: Edifici de Recerca – UOC, Rambla del Poblenou, 154, Barcelona

As a member of the organizing committee, I had the incredible opportunity to help shape and participate in the mHealth BCN Conference 2025, organized by Fundación iSYS ,  with the colaboration of eHealth Center of Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), the Sociedad Catalana de Medicina Familiar y Comunitaria (CAMFiC) and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, within the framework of BCN Health Innovation Week, led by Biocat and the BioRegion of Catalonia.

This year’s conference was a remarkable gathering of experts, innovators, and healthcare professionals, all committed to exploring the present and future of digital health. The discussions throughout the day highlighted key challenges and opportunities, focusing on:

  • The role of digital health in enhancing well-being and quality of life.
  • The importance of active aging and digital tools that support it.
  • Bridging the digital literacy gap for both users and professionals, preparing for the present—not just the future.
  • Developing user-centered applications, ensuring usability, utility, and long-term adherence.
  • AI’s impact on digital health, its benefits, risks, and potential inequalities.
  • The ethical and responsible use of health data, ensuring accessibility and fairness.

Reflections on the Future of Digital Health

Being part of the conference organization allowed me to see first-hand the complexity of digital health transformation. It is clear that for mHealth to be truly inclusive and effective, we need a multidisciplinary approach, one that embraces technological ethics, unbiased AI, and user-centric innovation.

Our mission goes beyond cost optimization; it is about empowering users and healthcare professionals, making digital health a tool for improving lives rather than a technological barrier.

While digital health has come a long way, we are still at the beginning of this journey. There is much work to be done, countless opportunities ahead, and an exciting evolution yet to unfold.

Grateful to have been part of this inspiring event and looking forward to the road ahead!

I participated online in the seminar “Data Analysis Applying AI Algorithms in Psychology and Education” on April 3rd.

This seminar gave me the opportunity to learn about another AI tool, WEKA, which is used for data mining and machine learning, combining accessibility and robustness in data analysis.

WEKA has been used in market research to segment customers and predict consumer trends (Ramos, 2025). It’s a free tool, accessible to all experience levels, and can upload data in CSV format, which is then converted to ARFF format for use in the tool.

This is crucial in my thesis program, as I handle data in that format. Furthermore, WEKA allows data and variables to be associated using the APRIORI rule, which only works with categorical variables, which predominate in my research. It also facilitates the generation of charts, histograms, and the exploration of patterns, such as correlations and trends in the data.

Although the seminar was very interesting, I was not able to practice much with the tool. To be able to take it into account for the development of my thesis I believe that I should take a specialized course on its operation and be able to use all the elements it must give it the maximum benefit. However, it is one more tool that I have at my disposal to be able to develop my project.

Behaviour Change Conference 2025

Date: 2 and 3 April 2025

Place: Lisbon, Portugal at the NOVA National School of Public Health.

The 9th International Conference from the UCL Centre for Behaviour Change will be held in partnership with the Behavioural Sciences Group at the NOVA National School of Public Health.

Competences: Attending the UCL Centre for Behaviour Change Conference in Lisbon was an incredibly enriching experience, both professionally and personally. The event gave me the opportunity to strengthen key competences related to behavioural science, digital health, and applied research.

Reflection:

This conference reminded me that impactful science isn’t just about publishing—it’s about creating change. Listening to stories of both success and failure gave me a more grounded perspective on what it takes to implement behavioural interventions in the real world.

I left feeling re-energized and more connected to a global community of changemakers. The presence and leadership of so many brilliant women in behavioural science was particularly inspiring. It made me reflect on the kind of collaborative, inclusive environment I want to foster in my own work.

Finally, the conference pushed me to take action: to share my ideas more openly, to build bridges with others, and to stay curious. I now see behaviour change not only as a field of study, but as a mindset to carry forward in every project.

The main goal of the doctoral thesis is to investigate the optimal conditions under which background music can enhance cognition in patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Specifically, the project focuses on attentional functions in patients with Parkinson’s disease and learning new information in patients with episodic memory deficits (Mild Cognitive Impairment – MCI). To achieve this, the study follows specific objectives inspired both by previous findings in healthy individuals and the effects of context and emotions on cognitive functions.

Over the past year, significant progress has been made, especially regarding the attentional functions in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The primary focus has been on Experiment 5, which aims to investigate the effects of mood and arousal induced by music (‘arousal-mood hypothesis’) on attentional performance in PD. Data collection has been successfully completed, and preliminary analysis suggests promising outcomes regarding the modulation of attentional networks through background music. The results have been presented at multiple international conferences, including The Neurosciences and Music VIII in Helsinki and The Future of Music and Arts in Medicine and Health (IAMM & ISfAM) in Berlin. Currently, I am in the process of writing a scientific paper based on these results, aiming to disseminate the findings within the academic community.

Regarding the learning and memory objectives (Experiments 1 to 4), Experiments 1, 2, and 3 have been completed and published in a scientific paper: (Calabria et al., 2023) Currently, data collection for Experiment 4 has been completed, and I am in the process of analyzing the data to investigate the effects of background music on associative memory tasks.

Overall, the project has advanced significantly toward achieving its research goals, with the attentional function study in PD nearing completion and substantial developments in the memory studies in MCI. The outcomes are expected to contribute valuable insights into the interplay between music, mood, and cognitive functions in clinical populations.
