Social inequalities in mental and self-perceived health in adolescence: A cross-sectional study (under review)

This article (currently under review since July 2024 at BMC Public Health) is one of the key outputs of my doctoral thesis. The process of developing this manuscript has been complex, as it involved collaboration with multiple researchers. This was necessary because the project was funded by one of the working groups within CIBER, Spain’s network of excellence in health research, specifically within CIBERESP’s Social Health Inequalities group.

As a result, I had the opportunity to work alongside researchers with extensive experience and expertise, which allowed me to improve various aspects of my work, including data analysis, conceptual development, and academic writing. The article is currently under review, and I am awaiting feedback to make the necessary revisions.

Reflection on the activity: Contributed as a co-author to the research paper titled “Efficacy of a Theatre-Based Intervention in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease”. The study evaluated the impact of theatre-based interventions on the emotional well-being of individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Findings demonstrated that such interventions have specific benefits for emotional well-being and non-specific benefits in reducing motor symptoms. My role encompassed research design, data collection, and analysis, contributing to the understanding of non-pharmacological therapies for PD.

This has been my third scientific article published as first author (2nd specific objective of my training plan). This achievement has greatly contributed to my development as a PhD student. It has allowed me to learn about the peer review process in a high impact journal, as well as to become aware of the importance of this process and the time it usually takes. On the other hand, now that I have finished the publication process, looking back from the theoretical approach, data collection, data analysis and writing, reviewing and publishing the article, I think I have a much better understanding of what is involved in doing scientific research from the beginning to the end, and what are the most important aspects to take into account at each stage.

Being a co-author on the article “Effects of social and environmental restrictions, and changes in alcohol availability in adolescents’ binge drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic” has been a valuable experience in my journey as a PhD student. It allowed me to gain a better understanding of the different roles that researchers can have in the process of creating a scientific paper. In this instance, I contributed by reviewing and sharing my insights on the work, while not being the lead author, which highlighted the importance of collaboration in research. Moreover, this project encouraged my personal growth, as it was led by a fellow PhD student from my research group (Epi4Health). Sharing similar learning experiences, we were able to exchange doubts and insights, which allowed us to learn from each other and enhance our academic development.

Sex differences in alcohol and other substance use in sexual contexts among adolescents: an observational study

Building on the findings of my previous study, Sexual violence in Catalan adolescents: prevalence, associated factors and health consequences, I sought to further explore the relationship between substance use and sexual practices among adolescents. This research process has allowed me to deepen my knowledge of the co-occurrence of these behaviors and their implications for public health. I have gained significant expertise in data analysis, particularly in the application of Poisson regression models to examine health risk factors. Additionally, I have…

This research process has allowed me to deepen my knowledge of the co-occurrence of these behaviors and their implications for public health. I have gained significant expertise in data analysis, particularly in the application of Poisson regression models to examine health risk factors. Additionally, I have strengthened my ability to critically assess gender and socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health. Through this study, I have also enhanced my skills in interpreting epidemiological data and translating findings into actionable recommendations for prevention programs.

Sexual violence in Catalan adolescents: prevalence, associated factors and health consequences

I have learned a lot by conducting this research and writing and publishing this article. Through the research process, I have deepened my understanding of the complexities of sexual violence among adolescents, its associated factors, and its impact on mental health and substance use. I have gained extensive knowledge in epidemiological methods, particularly in designing cross-sectional studies, handling large datasets, and applying statistical models such as Poisson regression. Additionally, I have developed a critical perspective on gender-sensitive public health policies…

Our publication, together with my co-authors José María Ruiz, Francesc Saigí-Rubió, and David Novillo-Ortiz, entitled The state of the art of telemedicine implementation architecture: a rapid umbrella review of systematic reviews, is being considered for publication in JMIR.  We are currently responding to peer review feedback and hope to submit the revisions shortly.  The findings of this study inform a pressing translational research knowledge gap in telemedicine implementation hindering the implementation of high-quality, sustainable and scalable telemedicine systems. Wish us luck!…

Throughout the months of October and November 2024, I have developed a scoping review protocol for conducting the review entitled The role of multimodality in dynamic assessment of language in children with neurodevelopmental disorders: a scoping review. This literature review will provide a theoretical foundation on how multimodality (e.g., the use of gestures) has been considered in dynamic language assessment across its different dimensions: phonology, lexicon, semantics, morphosyntax, pragmatics, and narrative.

For this purpose, both my academic supervisor, Dr. Alfonso Igualada, and other collaborators from UOC, Dr. Sergi Fábregues, as well as external collaborators, Dr. Eva Murillo (UAM), have provided their support and guidance throughout the development of the document.

The development and publication of the scoping review protocol has been a highly enriching learning experience, allowing me to deepen my understanding of systematic review methodologies, improve my research planning skills, and gain insights into the principles of open science and academic collaboration.

Currently, the review team consists of myself as the principal investigator and Pedro Ruíz Curcó, a Speech and Language Therapy undergraduate student at UOC. The timeline proposed in the protocol is being followed, and the full-text screening of the reports identified in the search has just been completed.

In line with open science principles, the protocol is publicated and  freely available  on OSF since November 12th, 2024: https://osf.io/4v25q/?view_only=10141ca5174249fba8d5228c05dbdab1
