Reflection: I am deeply honored to have received the Santander Prize for Best Doctoral Contribution in Open Science and the 1st National Award by Fundación Salud y Persona for Mental Health Research 2024. These awards acknowledge the efforts behind my research on cognitive control and brain stimulation in depression. I am particularly proud of the recognition for my project titled “Dissociating the role of the prefrontal cortex in cognitive control using non-invasive stimulation in patients with depression.”

These awards have not only validated my work but have also motivated me to continue pursuing my research with even more determination.

Place:  Pompeu Fabra University. Barcelona. Organized by the IULATERM Group, Institute of Applied Linguistics IULA-CER.

The Healthcom Conference consists of an interdisciplinary scientific day aimed at researchers and professionals in health, applied linguistics, terminology, and communication in this field.

Among the highlights of the conference, there were discussions on how play facilitates communication in hospitalized paediatric patients, improving their understanding of information, providing emotional support, and normalizing their situation. Additionally, strategies to enhance doctor-patient communication in paediatric settings were also discussed.

Another important topic covered was gender bias in paediatric care, where perspectives on the facilitators of this bias and its implications for children’s health were provided.

Competences:

Ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general about their fields of knowledge in the modes and languages commonly used in the international scientific community.

Ability to promote, in academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural progress within a knowledge-based society.

Reflection on the Learning Undertaken:

Attending the Healthcom Conference provided important knowledge about how health communication, applied linguistics and terminology, come together in healthcare environments. The discussions on how play facilitates communication in hospitalized pediatric patients were particularly enlightening. I learned how play can significantly improve children’s understanding of medical information, provide emotional support, and help normalize their hospital experience. This knowledge is crucial for developing effective communication strategies that cater to the unique needs of paediatric patients.

The conference also highlighted the importance of enhancing doctor-patient communication in paediatric settings. The strategies discussed will be instrumental in my research, as they offer practical approaches to improving interactions between healthcare providers and young patients. Understanding these strategies will enable me to contribute to the development of more effective communication practices in healthcare.

Another critical topic covered was gender bias in paediatric care. The perspectives shared on this bias and its implications for children’s health underscored the need for equitable healthcare practices. This aligns with my research focus on community health improvement, as addressing gender bias is essential for ensuring fair and just healthcare for all children.

The conference reinforced the significance of clear and empathetic communication in healthcare and provided practical strategies to address communication challenges.  This perspective is essential for more equitable healthcare practices and policies, which aligns with my research focus on community health improvement. Moreover, the ability to communicate effectively with both the academic and scientific community and society in general is crucial for advancing knowledge and promoting progress within a knowledge-based society.

“Com fer un pla de gestió de dades amb l’eiNa DMP”

Date: 12 March 2025

Location: online session

I recently attended the “Com fer un pla de gestió de dades amb l’eiNa DMP” training session, which provided valuable insights into Research Data Management (RDM) and the importance of creating structured Data Management Plans (DMPs).

The session emphasized the role of open science and the need for well-organized data handling, from generation to preservation and sharing. Learning about the eiNa DMP tool and its application in research projects was particularly useful, as it facilitates the planning and compliance with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). The event also included an interactive Q&A, allowing for discussion on best practices and real-world challenges in research data management.

Thanks to this workshop, we have now started developing the Data Management Plan (DMP) for the SPARK thesis :) .

Reflections from the Organizing Committee

Date: 19 February 2025

Location: Edifici de Recerca – UOC, Rambla del Poblenou, 154, Barcelona

As a member of the organizing committee, I had the incredible opportunity to help shape and participate in the mHealth BCN Conference 2025, organized by Fundación iSYS ,  with the colaboration of eHealth Center of Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), the Sociedad Catalana de Medicina Familiar y Comunitaria (CAMFiC) and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, within the framework of BCN Health Innovation Week, led by Biocat and the BioRegion of Catalonia.

This year’s conference was a remarkable gathering of experts, innovators, and healthcare professionals, all committed to exploring the present and future of digital health. The discussions throughout the day highlighted key challenges and opportunities, focusing on:

  • The role of digital health in enhancing well-being and quality of life.
  • The importance of active aging and digital tools that support it.
  • Bridging the digital literacy gap for both users and professionals, preparing for the present—not just the future.
  • Developing user-centered applications, ensuring usability, utility, and long-term adherence.
  • AI’s impact on digital health, its benefits, risks, and potential inequalities.
  • The ethical and responsible use of health data, ensuring accessibility and fairness.

Reflections on the Future of Digital Health

Being part of the conference organization allowed me to see first-hand the complexity of digital health transformation. It is clear that for mHealth to be truly inclusive and effective, we need a multidisciplinary approach, one that embraces technological ethics, unbiased AI, and user-centric innovation.

Our mission goes beyond cost optimization; it is about empowering users and healthcare professionals, making digital health a tool for improving lives rather than a technological barrier.

While digital health has come a long way, we are still at the beginning of this journey. There is much work to be done, countless opportunities ahead, and an exciting evolution yet to unfold.

Grateful to have been part of this inspiring event and looking forward to the road ahead!

On January 28th, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar on Ethics, led by David Font. It was very interesting to attend and learn about all the necessary steps to obtain data while ensuring compliance with all the required protection measures.

In the meeting, key topics regarding the role of the Ethics Committee were discussed. The necessary steps to obtain its approval were explained, including the evaluation of ethical protocols in doctoral theses and research projects, compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the application of principles such as informed consent.

David Font also emphasized the importance of anonymization and data security. It was clarified that researchers must submit their projects to the Ethics Committee before starting data collection and that any subsequent changes to the research protocol must be reported for re-evaluation.

The feasibility of Data Transfer Agreements (DTA) and Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) between institutions and countries when necessary was also discussed. Additionally, Carlos Torres’ inquiry about submitting a report to the UOC Ethics Committee after obtaining CEIM approval was addressed, with an agreement that he would send an email to clarify his specific case. Finally, it was noted that the infographic and presentation will be available on the Ethics Committee’s web space.

This summary was made possible thanks to the AI tool Read (https://app.read.ai/), which is a very useful resource for seminars and online meetings. It allows participants to stay focused without having to take notes and risk missing important explanations.

Although this summary was generated by AI, I would like to add my personal opinion about the seminar. While it was very interesting to attend, in my case, I did not have to collect data myself, as it was already provided to me. However, I did have to request permission from the relevant authorities. I had to submit a formal application and seek the intervention of my supervisors, but since the Desk-Cohort project data is closely linked to the UOC, obtaining it was easier. Nevertheless, the process took a long time because the data was being processed to facilitate analysis.
