The main goal of the doctoral thesis is to investigate the optimal conditions under which background music can enhance cognition in patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Specifically, the project focuses on attentional functions in patients with Parkinson’s disease and learning new information in patients with episodic memory deficits (Mild Cognitive Impairment – MCI). To achieve this, the study follows specific objectives inspired both by previous findings in healthy individuals and the effects of context and emotions on cognitive functions.

Over the past year, significant progress has been made, especially regarding the attentional functions in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The primary focus has been on Experiment 5, which aims to investigate the effects of mood and arousal induced by music (‘arousal-mood hypothesis’) on attentional performance in PD. Data collection has been successfully completed, and preliminary analysis suggests promising outcomes regarding the modulation of attentional networks through background music. The results have been presented at multiple international conferences, including The Neurosciences and Music VIII in Helsinki and The Future of Music and Arts in Medicine and Health (IAMM & ISfAM) in Berlin. Currently, I am in the process of writing a scientific paper based on these results, aiming to disseminate the findings within the academic community.

Regarding the learning and memory objectives (Experiments 1 to 4), Experiments 1, 2, and 3 have been completed and published in a scientific paper: (Calabria et al., 2023) Currently, data collection for Experiment 4 has been completed, and I am in the process of analyzing the data to investigate the effects of background music on associative memory tasks.

Overall, the project has advanced significantly toward achieving its research goals, with the attentional function study in PD nearing completion and substantial developments in the memory studies in MCI. The outcomes are expected to contribute valuable insights into the interplay between music, mood, and cognitive functions in clinical populations.

In the coming academic year, I plan to build on the progress achieved so far by focusing on the dissemination and further development of my research. Below are the key planned activities:

·       Submit manuscript on Experiment 5 (Parkinson’s Disease and attention): The paper will present the results from 51 participants and focus on the modulation of attentional networks through background music. The manuscript aims to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal specializing in cognitive neuroscience or neuropsychology.

·       Submit manuscript on Experiment 4 (Associative memory and MCI): Based on data from 42 participants, this paper will explore the effect of musical background and arousal on associative memory. It will include detailed analyses of cognitive performance and discuss individual differences in responsiveness to music. Submission is planned for a journal in the fields of aging, memory, or clinical neuropsychology.

·       Attend international conference – Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC) 2025: My study with Parkinson’s patients has been accepted as poster presentation. Participating in this conference will offer valuable networking opportunities with international experts in the field of music and cognition.

·       Explore secondment opportunities related to neuromodulation and music-based interventions: I will seek research stays at centers specializing in neuromodulation or clinical music interventions to deepen my knowledge and foster international collaboration.

·       Plan and conduct a new experiment using fNIRS: Building on the experience from my Parkinson’s study, I intend to develop a new experiment that investigates the neural mechanisms of music-related cognitive enhancement. The study will integrate fNIRS technology with updated behavioral paradigms.

From January to March 2024, I participated in empathization and co-creation workshops for people with depression and mental health professionals in Girona, Barcelona, Málaga, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

My participation in the organization of the workshops, as well as my role as an observer, allowed me to gain a deep understanding of the design thinking process and its dynamics. Moreover, this experience has made me realize the importance of detecting the real needs of end users and involving them, along with all stakeholders, in the development and implementation of health and digital health interventions to improve usability, health outcomes, and user experiences. Participatory processes can help prevent people from having to adapt to technology while fostering tools that are adapted to them.

Fecha: Durante 2025

Competencies and reflection on the learning undertaken: Writing the research proposal has been a challenging activity that has thrust me into the joys and difficulties of PhD life. When I first enrolled, I came to the proposal writing with an already defined idea on the topic. As I explored the literature, I added some elements outside my initial thoughts. While it seemed a good path forward as far as a research topic goes, one of my supervisors didn’t think that could yield significant results, and I could risk that all my work during my PhD may not be as helpful and valuable as it could be. After thinking about it, I shifted the focus of my topic slightly. However, this set me back several months, and while I was hoping to have my proposal ready by mid to late January of 2025, I submitted my proposal just a few hours ago (April 1st). This has been a stressful and somewhat discouraging experience. However, I am pleased with my final proposal. Despite the time constraints, I created a cohesive proposal and put forward a topic for research that is needed and personally engaging. Throughout the process, I have had the full support of both of my supervisors, who have responded to my many questions and guided me when needed.

I have done research before and currently do. However, through this process, I have developed new knowledge on the “ins and outs” of research proposal writing that I didn’t have, such as the level of detail required in the methodology section. I have also sharpened my skills in working under pressure while managing my job and personal life responsibilities. This process has also helped me evaluate and more firmly decide if this path (the PhD) I want to follow. The answer is yes. Despite the difficulties, this is worth my time and effort personally and professionally.

After having designed the materials for my first experiment, I ran two piloting versions. On January, I ran a prepilot with three people who knew about the goal of the study. That was done so that I could make sure that the instructions and the stimuli were clear enough. This first prepilot allowed me to detect some aspects that could be improved, such as certain stimuli transitions or the form of a few words that could interfere with the participants’ mother tongue. Having enhanced these parts, in March I ran a pilot with three different people who did not know about the phenomenon under investigation, so that they would act as real participants. The experiment seemed to run successfully, so no major changes were applied; however, it was useful to reduce the length of the first experimental phase, which seemed to be too long.

Stimuli design

Since September 2024, I specifically worked on the design of the stimuli for the first experiment of my thesis. The experiment aims at exploring the role of prominence in the acquisition and the generalization of verb-inflectional morphemes (particularly, singular and plural) among typically-developing adults. To do so, I have prepared the stimuli of my first experiment of the thesis. It consists of video recordings in which a Catalan-speaking person produces non-sense words (verbs) with different prominence markers on the inflectional morpheme: no prominence, prosodic prominence and multimodal prominence. Each of the videos representing verbs is simultaneously matched with a picture of an image (AI-generated picture) representing an action that is either in a singular form (e.g. a person biking – duntol) or in a plural form (i.e., more than one person biking – duntop). This process has contributed to a better understanding of  the methodologies used within language acquisition and to develop critical thinking skills in order to scientifically assess the efficiency of my design.

Lugar: Posada Guadalupe, Monroyo (Teruel)
