This seminar covered several key topics essential for conducting ethical research and ensuring data protection in doctoral projects. The main points discussed included:

  1. The Research Ethics Committee (CER):  Providing a detailed description of the functions of the CER.
  2. Ethical Principles and Research Integrity: Understanding the importance of ethical principles such as respect for human dignity, autonomy, equality, justice, and social responsibility in research projects.
  3. Legal Framework for Data Protection: Overview of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Spanish Organic Law on personal data protection, emphasizing the legal requirements for handling personal data in research.
  4. Procedure of Ethical Evaluation: Detailed explanation of the process for submitting ethical protocols to the CER, including the necessary forms and documentation to ensure compliance with ethical and data protection standards.

Ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial research or creation process.

Reflection on the Learning Undertaken:

Attending this seminar has significantly enhanced my understanding of the ethical and legal considerations involved in conducting research. I learned the importance of adhering to ethical principles and research integrity to ensure the well-being and rights of research participants. The seminar provided valuable insights into the legal framework governing data protection, which is crucial for handling personal data responsibly and avoiding potential breaches.

The detailed procedure for ethical evaluation highlighted the importance of submitting comprehensive ethical protocols to the CER. This process not only ensures compliance with ethical and legal standards but also improves the quality of the research through feedback and validation. Understanding these procedures will be instrumental in preparing my doctoral thesis, ensuring that my research is conducted ethically and responsibly.

It was a great pleasure to be part of the research team undertaking a national telemedicine study to support the Ministry of Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Republika Srpska in introducing and developing telemedicine services. The study is part of the EU Support for Health Sector Reforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina” (BIH) project..  The report of the study is expected to be submitted shortly.

The objectives of the research were to assess the current status, as well as to identify potential weaknesses that could hinder the development of telemedicine services in both entities; and to support the creation of a strategic roadmap for the development and implementation of telemedicine services.

This study utilised a descriptive cross-sectional online mixed-method survey design, based on the constructs of the Support Tool https://www.who.int/europe/publications/i/item/WHO-EURO-2024-9548-49320-73720 to Strengthen Telemedicine as a conceptual framework and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework as a theoretical foundation.

Findings provide rich insights into the strengths and weaknesses of telemedicine services in BIH and strong foundations for strategic planning for the consolidation and scaleup of telemedicine services in BIH

In January 2025, I was able to participate as part of the team in the development and creation of the proposal for a research project titled:

Multimodal approaches to language learning: insights into the linguistic skills of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (MultiLearn Project).

This project aims to be funded through calls for ‘Knowledge Generation Projects.’ The team is composed of highly qualified experts both nationally and internationally.

My inclusion in this project provides me with the opportunity to learn how to develop a proper justification, methodology, and development plan for a research project. These skills will be applied throughout my own research, and if the project is funded, many of its objectives will align with my doctoral thesis, creating a mutually beneficial outcome for both the project and my academic work.

You can see above an image in which I participated to show the use of multimodality in oral instructions within a dynamic language assessment task.
