In March 2025, I started this course, which that I have not finished yet. The subjects covered include understanding how to select the right magazine, ensuring its credibility, and navigating the peer review process. Additionally, the course delves deeply into impact factors, other evaluation criteria, and open access options.

Competences:

  • Ability to contribute to expanding the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
  • Ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general about their fields of knowledge in the modes and languages ​​commonly used in the international scientific community.
  • Ability to promote, in academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural progress within a knowledge-based society.

Reflection on the learning undertaken:

Through this course, I hope to acquire the necessary skills to find the best magazine to publish my articles resulting from my doctoral thesis. Not only am I confident that I will better understand the reasons why publishing in open access is so interesting, but I am also excited to learn how the Impact Factor of a journal affects the visibility and credibility of my publications. Additionally, I aim to gain skills to avoid falling into the hands of exploitative publishers.

Being a co-author on the article “Effects of social and environmental restrictions, and changes in alcohol availability in adolescents’ binge drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic” has been a valuable experience in my journey as a PhD student. It allowed me to gain a better understanding of the different roles that researchers can have in the process of creating a scientific paper. In this instance, I contributed by reviewing and sharing my insights on the work, while not being the lead author, which highlighted the importance of collaboration in research. Moreover, this project encouraged my personal growth, as it was led by a fellow PhD student from my research group (Epi4Health). Sharing similar learning experiences, we were able to exchange doubts and insights, which allowed us to learn from each other and enhance our academic development.

Presenting my research in poster format at the Institut d’Investigació Germans Trias i Pujol Research Retreat was a valuable learning experience during my PhD. One of the biggest challenges was synthesizing and summarizing key findings while ensuring the information was presented in a clear, visually engaging, and accessible way. Unlike oral presentations, a poster requires a concise yet impactful approach to communicate complex results effectively. Beyond the presentation itself, participating in this retreat provided a unique opportunity for networking within my institution. I had the chance to meet other researchers, learn about the diverse projects being conducted, and engage in informal discussions about my work. The retreat fostered a collaborative and relaxed environment, allowing for insightful feedback and new perspectives that will help shape the next steps of my research.

Participating in the Reunión Anual de la Sociedad Española de Epidemiología has been a valuable experience in my PhD journey. Presenting my research on the sexualized use of alcohol and drugs among adolescents provided me with the opportunity to practice my oral presentation and scientific communication skills, as well as to effectively convey my findings to a specialized audience. Attending a leading conference in my field also allowed me to engage in networking, connect with other researchers, and exchange insights with experts working on similar topics. Additionally, it was an excellent way to stay updated on the latest developments in public health research, gaining new perspectives that will enrich my work. This experience has reinforced the importance of scientific dissemination and collaboration, essential elements for advancing knowledge and improving public health policies.

Building on the findings of my previous study, Sexual violence in Catalan adolescents: prevalence, associated factors and health consequences, I sought to further explore the relationship between substance use and sexual practices among adolescents. This research process has allowed me to deepen my knowledge of the co-occurrence of these behaviors and their implications for public health. I have gained significant expertise in data analysis, particularly in the application of Poisson regression models to examine health risk factors. Additionally, I have strengthened my ability to critically assess gender and socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health. Through this study, I have also enhanced my skills in interpreting epidemiological data and translating findings into actionable recommendations for prevention programs.

I have learned a lot by conducting this research and writing and publishing this article. Through the research process, I have deepened my understanding of the complexities of sexual violence among adolescents, its associated factors, and its impact on mental health and substance use. I have gained extensive knowledge in epidemiological methods, particularly in designing cross-sectional studies, handling large datasets, and applying statistical models such as Poisson regression.
