In January 2025, I was able to participate as part of the team in the development and creation of the proposal for a research project titled:

Multimodal approaches to language learning: insights into the linguistic skills of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (MultiLearn Project).

This project aims to be funded through calls for ‘Knowledge Generation Projects.’ The team is composed of highly qualified experts both nationally and internationally.

My inclusion in this project provides me with the opportunity to learn how to develop a proper justification, methodology, and development plan for a research project. These skills will be applied throughout my own research, and if the project is funded, many of its objectives will align with my doctoral thesis, creating a mutually beneficial outcome for both the project and my academic work.

You can see above an image in which I participated to show the use of multimodality in oral instructions within a dynamic language assessment task.

On February 28, 2025, I participated in the Employment Forum at the University of Valencia (Faculty of Psychology and Speech and Language Therapy) as a speech and language therapist, with a professional profile characterized by being a PhD student and a clinical speech and language therapist.

During the session, I had the opportunity to explain to the 4th-year Speech and Language Therapy students at the University of Valencia my academic journey at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, as well as the objectives of my research project. This open space allowed me to present the purpose of my research in an accessible way and highlight its importance within the field of speech and language therapy, both theoretically and practically.

Rayyan is an AI-powered systematic review tool designed to assist researchers in screening and organizing articles for literature reviews.

In September 2024, I attended the Rayyan online webinar titled ‘How to Conduct Reviews Using Rayyan to Its Complete Potential.’ In this course, I learned the step-by-step process of conducting systematic and literature reviews using Rayyan.

This training has enabled me to use this powerful tool in different stages of the scoping review, such as title and abstract screening, as well as full-text screening, while being able to comfortably export the data in CSV format for further analysis.

Throughout the months of October and November 2024, I have developed a scoping review protocol for conducting the review entitled The role of multimodality in dynamic assessment of language in children with neurodevelopmental disorders: a scoping review. This literature review will provide a theoretical foundation on how multimodality (e.g., the use of gestures) has been considered in dynamic language assessment across its different dimensions: phonology, lexicon, semantics, morphosyntax, pragmatics, and narrative.

For this purpose, both my academic supervisor, Dr. Alfonso Igualada, and other collaborators from UOC, Dr. Sergi Fábregues, as well as external collaborators, Dr. Eva Murillo (UAM), have provided their support and guidance throughout the development of the document.

The development and publication of the scoping review protocol has been a highly enriching learning experience, allowing me to deepen my understanding of systematic review methodologies, improve my research planning skills, and gain insights into the principles of open science and academic collaboration.

Currently, the review team consists of myself as the principal investigator and Pedro Ruíz Curcó, a Speech and Language Therapy undergraduate student at UOC. The timeline proposed in the protocol is being followed, and the full-text screening of the reports identified in the search has just been completed.

In line with open science principles, the protocol is publicated and  freely available  on OSF since November 12th, 2024: https://osf.io/4v25q/?view_only=10141ca5174249fba8d5228c05dbdab1

From October 11th to 13th (2024), I attended the ADOS-2 Clinical Accreditation Course, led by Amalia Hervás and organized by IGAIN.

This  online course was crucial for understanding the multimodal component of diagnostic evaluation in autism, as it provided thorough training on the ADOS-2 tool. ADOS-2 not only addressed the linguistic aspects of communication but also incorporated non-verbal cues and interactions, offering a comprehensive approach to assessment.

Gaining accreditation in this assessment protocol was essential for accurately analyzing both verbal and non-verbal behaviors, which are key in the diagnostic process for autism. Additionally, this training was highly valuable for the design of a new dynamic assessment of language tool that takes into account the specific characteristics of the autistic population, ensuring a more tailored and effective evaluation approach.

On October 1st (2024), I attended an online session hosted by the Doctoral School on the software Atlas.ti, presented by Sergi Fàbregues and Enrique Baleiora. This session focused on exploring the functionalities of Atlas.ti for qualitative data analysis in health and psychology research. The experts provided a range of practical tools and techniques to enhance data organization and interpretation.

The training was essential for improving my skills in qualitative research, equipping me with valuable insights into data coding and analysis that I can apply in our participatory research project.

Hosted by the Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, this session provided valuable insights into how gestures impact narrative comprehension depending on various factors related to the task, the gesture itself, and individual characteristics. This knowledge will help us better understand the impact of gestures on language comprehension and oral instructions, allowing us to design a meaningful multimodal dynamic assessment approach for language.
